Bangladesh officials have recognised five of the men who on Friday carried out the country’s worst terrorism attack and said they were known to police.
Twenty hostages, most of them from foreign, were killed when Islamist militants stormed a cafe in its capital. Two police officers also died and 30 were injured.
The so-called Islamic State(IS) group said it was behind the attack, however, the government denied this. Bangladesh’s home minister said on Sunday that the attackers hailed from a local militant group which has been banned for more than a decade.
Asaduzzaman Khan said: “They are members of the Jamaeytul Mujahdeen Bangladesh (JMB).”
Khan said that they had no demands during the attack.
He added that three of them were below 22 and had gone missing for six months.
Six attackers were killed in the raid and a seventh man was arrested and is still being catechized.
Meanwhile, India has beefed up security along the border in the wake of Bangladesh attacks.
Also, Indian intelligence agencies have warned Bangladesh that more terrorist attacks may take place in the neighbouring country after Sunday’s attack which claimed 28 lives including a 19-year -old Indian lass Tarishi Jain.
They warned Dhaka that the ‘Jamaat’ groups are still active in Bangladesh and that the group is pro-active along the Indo-Bangla border.
