Nokia has announced closing down its Chennai Plant at Sriperumbudur, making more than 8000 workers jobless.
“As announced earlier (October 7), we are stopping handset production at our Chennai plant from tomorrow (November 1) in the absence of orders from our new parent firm (Microsoft), which terminated the mobile purchase agreement,” a Nokia India spokesperson told IANS.
After Nokia was acquired Microsoft, the company decided to suspend manufacturing handsets from its Chennai plant over a tax notice of Rs 23,000 crore from the Tamil Nadu government.
“We can confirm that constructive discussions with union representatives and the labour commissioner have resulted in an agreement on a financial package for Chennai factory personnel,” the company spokesperson had said in a statement a day after the meeting between company officials and labour union.
