Board exams’ results have been announced, and entrances and admissions have commenced. Renowned psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty interacts with Spectralhues’ Anushka Jain about widespread post-result depression amid the current stressed environment and how students can deal with it. Following are the transcripts:
High expectations is something a child often becomes a victim of. How should such a situation be dealt with by teens?
The child should tell the parents, first of all, that an exam is not a milestone, but a stone with many miles to go. Number two: the child should also share exactly what went wrong in his/her exam so that they are able to help him in the future. Three: the child should share his/her desires of career or stream very openly with a lot of passion. The child should also share what parents can do and what they cannot do in the future. Finally, they should persuade their parents to take them for an aptitude test or a career test.
What are the noted repercussions of a parent choosing a stream or degree for their child?
The child may lose interest in the subject, may get low self-esteem, feel depressed or let down, may wander and get into drugs or fall into inappropriate relationships or friendships. Child might fail in an exam and come home and lie, and might lose interest in life. Sometimes he/she may pass the exams and complete the course, but then lose meaning in life.
How should a child deal with depression due to low scores?
They cannot deal with it alone, they have to seek help. You can’t cure a heart attack alone, similarly you can’t help a mind-attack. A fracture of the mind cannot be cured by itself. It may help with the sprain of the mind
How can parents spot the early signs of depression in their child?
If the child starts bunking process, he fails making eye-to-eye contact, avoids parents, bunks his college, fails to make an appearance in the first test and is always very irritable, angry or lazy, then they should consult a counselor immediately.
After boards, entrance exams await many. How can kids deal with nervousness for such exams?
First of all, keep your apples in many bags- appear for many exams. Don’t believe that your college is a brand but that you are a brand. Do your vipassana, relaxation therapy, share your feelings with your friends, best friends, and give the exams in a calm and composed manner.
How should students prepare well for their interviews for admission?
Sleep on time, practice mock interviews, share it with your friends, and before the interview do a lot of relaxing interviews. Mock test yourself for interviews.
