Started off with reality show and reached such height, Aishwarya Nigam has completely proved himself in terms of playback singing. We got a chance to talk to this fresh sensation about his life and intense moment of his career. Here’s what he had to share with spectralhues.
How has your life changed since after Sa Re Ga Ma?
That was the first big platform that I stepped on, ofcourse life definitely changed. Sa Re Ga Ma has reduced that struggle which every newcomer have to face in this dream city. It takes years for an artist to generate his own identity but then I was suddenly subjected to the affection of millions of viewers. I even landed my first playback in ‘Munni Badnam hui’ I’m boundlessly grateful to Sa Re Ga Ma and Zee for providing me my first exposure!
How do you physically, emotionally, and mentally prepare before recording a song?
I do my ‘Riyaz’ and little homework, I don’t need much preparation as my throat is generally ready for most of the recordings. I just keep calm prior to a recording and just need to know for whom I am lending my voice to. It’s all about the song from that moment when I enter in the studio.
With new musical reality shows coming up every year, do you think it has had an impact on playback singing?
Reality shows are giving way to a lot of freshness, opportunities and talent which is being discovered by composers and that’s naturally affecting the playback scene in a positive way. It’s been great medium for people like me who have no contacts in the industry otherwise. These shows provide introductory push to the who’s who of Tinsel Town.
What do you think is the most important aspect of a song?
The most important is a feel in the song. There’s other lot things which makes a song perfect but priority for an Indian song is the feel that one must breathe life into every word in the line.
Who did you listen to while growing up? Who are your favorite singers and why?
Rafi Sahab has been my greatest musical influence as I brought up by listening and learning from his songs. He’s been prayed at my home since my childhood. I love and listen to one I admire a lot, Sonu Nigam ji, he’s such a talented bag of versatility. It takes something special to be the champion of dimension.
Any other plans for small screen after the popular title tracks for the daily soaps ‘Dill Mill Gaye’ and ‘Kitni Mohabbat Hai’?
Not exactly, I did not get any such song again yet I am open for all. I am glad that my songs got such popularity that recently in my concert, crowd has demanded me to sing these tracks and over a lakh of people appreciated and enjoyed a lot!
How important is independent music nowadays?
Music is the backbone of Bollywood. The first reason for any successful and unsuccessful movie is its music. The scenario in India has always been people listening to more to conventional movie songs rather than independent music. But still series like Unplugged and Coke Studio are like a breath of fresh air. I’ll always keep singing for Movies and recently I’ve got a call to lend my voice in two albums for Youtube.
What do you think makes a song successful or not successful?
I believe that a song gets successful by the attraction of singer’s voice. It’s very important for a singer to get into the feel and sing it soul out. I don’t dwell on the success of a song before singing it. I just do my job and then hope for good results. It’s important to have conviction in what you do.
How has movies & musicians affected your singing styles?
It has changed a lot. ‘Munni Badnam Hui’ has been an exposure to me after that song I came to know that I can play loud and on high pitch so well. After every song I’ve came to know more about my singing genre and improved it at the places where it’s possible.
While working with heavy named Music Directors like Pritam, Sajid Wajid, shameer Tandon have you ever felt nervousness?
I might sound lil arrogant, but truly speaking I did not felt nervousness at all. In my younger age I had that feeling that I will do this all definitely some or the other day of my life, so while working with them I felt that it was all preplanned for me. And I am just so grateful to all the people for giving me the chance and opportunity to prove myself.
What are your future projects?
Actually it’s a long list, and there are almost 25 back to back songs. I have a playback song coming up in ‘Gang of Ghost’ for Sharman Joshi again after ‘Ferari ki Sawari’, then its Diya Mirza’s home production movie ‘Bobby Jasoos, Salman Khan Movies ‘Kick’ and ‘Oye Teri’, ‘welcome back’ for Anand Raj Anand, 2 songs for Kapil Sibal’s film and lots more in this year.
