As per latest study by Assocham, the medical tourism in the country has been increased by 40 per cent in the last six months. The reasons are mainly due to the fall of rupee against dollars and other major currencies.
“Fall of rupee versus dollar has proved to be advantageous to the patients from Middle East, Africa and SAARC countries to the extent of 35 to 45 per cent on complex surgeries,” Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.
The Indian medical tourism is a promising sector and emerging as one of the most sought after medical destination in Asia. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and New Delhi have come out as the most popular medical destinations which provide super-specialty hospitals and clinics, affordable lodging and better transportation and communication facilities.
With current value of 7,500 crore, Indian medical tourism sector is set to reach Rs 12,000 crore by 2015.
“The inflow of medical tourists in India is also likely to cross 45 lakh by 2015 from the current level of 25 lakh,” the study said.
