In a joint-venture with Tata Sons and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace Ltd, the leading low cost carrier in Malaysia, Air Asia wants to start an airline service in India.
Reportedly Air Asia wants to invest 49% in the planned joint venture. Air Asia has submitted an application to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) and proposed to start operations from Chennai.
AirAsia founder and group CEO Tony Fernandes said in a statement, “We have carefully evaluated developments in India over the last few years and strongly believe that the current environment is perfect to introduce AirAsia’s low fares which stimulate travel and grow the market.”
