GoodNewwz – Spam mix creates a havoc

‘GoodNewwz’, the latest Bollywood comedy released just before the end of 2019 revolves around the last hope of infertile couples – Invitro Fertilisation (IVF). The sophisticated Batras, Varun (Akshay) and Deepti (Kareena) visit this posh Mumbai fertility clinic run by the specialist gynacs, the Joshis (Adil and Tisca) to check their final possibilities to have their own child. The process began well on a positive note, but confusion creeped in midst of it when the clinic by mistake did a sperm mix-up with another set of culturally dissimilar Batra couple’s (Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani).
This confusion ought to bring in laughter which was mainly in the first half of the film. Scenes like Deepti aka Deepu checking out the right date on the ovulating calendar, her compulsion to have sex and Varun’s stressed look before having sex is too comical, to him its no less than a surgical strike! Situation gets more complex and hilarious with the entry of another pair of Batras from Chandigarh, Honey (Diljit Dosanjh) and Monika aka Moni (Kiara Advani). The second half of the film eventually slips into melodrama and sentimentality to a large extent which shows the director Raj Mehta and his writers believe in couple of age-old ideas – a) own baby is more precious than an adopted one (aapna khoon toh apna hi hota hai); b) a child brings balance in every couple’s life. With such thought process, it was quite easy for the film to go off the track, but fortunately it didn’t happen as the actors stay sincere and committed to their characters.
Akshay’s dialogues are refreshing and his comic timings are too apt that goes without saying. Kareena is superb as a senior journalist who wants to have a baby desperately. She is real and honest in her desire to become a mother. Diljit and Kiara live up to their characters as the fashion challenged Punjabi couple with ever-ready tendency of intertwining English words. Additionally, Diljit is not too far behind Akshay as far as the comic timing is concerned.
For me, it’s a 2 out of 5 stars for ‘GoodNewwz’. Quirky and funny way to end 2019 of course!
