Legendary singer and composer Manna Dey is no more. He passed away this morning at 3:30 am at Hrudayalaya hospital in Bangalore at the age of 94. He had been treated for respiratory illness and renal failure and was admitted in the ICU since June 8 this year. In presence of his daughter and son-in-law, Manna Dey took his last breathe.
Manna Dey’s body will be kept for public tributes at Bangalore’s Ravindra Kala Shetra from 10 am to 12 pm. His funeral will be held today itslef.
Born in 1919 in a cultural Bengali family, Manna Dey started his playback career in 1942 with the film Tamanna. In his long career he has sung over 4000 songs in various languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and Assamese.
Some of his hit songs include: ‘Pyar hua ikrar hua’, ‘Ae meri zohra jabeen’, ‘’Ay mere pyare watan’, ‘Puchho na kaise bitayi raina’, ‘Laga Chunari Mein Daag’, ‘Aao Twist Karen’ and ‘Ek chatur naar’.
Manna Dey had been honoured with several awards in his career. In 2007 he was awarded with country’s highest cultural award the Dada Saheb Phalke Award. He got both Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan titles. He won 3 National awards and numerous other top awards including Filmfare.
