Legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen passed away today at a nursing home in Kolkata. She was 82.
The veteran actress was long suffering from respiratory problems and was admitted to the hospital on 23rd December last year. She was on partial ventilation since yesterday after her condition deteriorated.
“Sen had breathing problems and her oxygen saturation limit dipped. Seeing the deterioration in her condition, the doctors put her on non-invasive ventilation,” nursing home sources said last night.
The 82-year-old actress had chosen self-exile and lived reclusively. She had been detached from media and public life for more than four decades. Her paring with Uttam Kumar became a legend in Bengali film industry and popularly known as the golden era of Bengali cinema. She acted in several Hindi films too. Some of her famous films include Devdas, Aandhi, Bombai Ka Baboo, Saat Paake Bandha, Agnipariksha, Saptopadi, Uttar Falguni, Devi Chaudhurani and Deep Jele Jai.
For Saat Paake Bandha she won the Best actress in leading role in 1963 Moscow film festival. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972. She received Banga Bibhushan, West Bengal government`s highest civilian award in 2012. She allegedly refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005 because she did not want public appearance.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to the legendary actress.
“Today is a sad day for all of us. With her passing away we have lost a colossal figure,” Mamata said.
“Her family wants a quiet funeral arrangement for her. We need your cooperation to respect their wish,” she said.
