Just when the fans of Marvel were sitting on their front porches sipping that cold lemonade, going over the absolutely entertaining Captain America: Civil War, little did they know that somewhere, Nick Spencer was writing one of the biggest plot twists in comic book history.
Captain America was revealed to be a Hydra member, turning him into everything and everyone he ever fought against. Famous for punching Hitler even before America took part in the World War II, this reveal came as a shock, surprise and disappointment.
When ‘Captain America: Steve Rogers No.1’ was launched this Wednesday, Marvel made this huge revelation, leaving fans around the globe to grab for a paper bag to breathe into.
So, what happens when one of the most patriotic hero of all time is revealed to be a sleeper agent? What makes believing this so difficult?
Here are the answers to all these questions and everything else we know about the developments so far:
1) Why it stands against everything we know about Captain, right from his creation for the first time ever?
Created by Jewish writers, Captain America was to stand up for everything right, especially justice and peace. He was an impression of their lives back in the time of Adolf Hitler. He was made to inspire people to come out to Hitler and stand up for what is right and fight for it. Making him a secret, sleeper agent is nothing but a slap in the face of the writers. It makes us doubt everything that we have ever known about him.
2) How can we trace his association with Hydra?
‘Captain America: Steve Rogers No.1’ helps us unravel more about Cap, which included flashbacks to his young days with his mother, Sarah. As mentioned in the earlier comic books, Sarah is the one who stands up to her alcoholic and abusive husband, thus teaching Steve the importance of standing up for what is right and fighting for it.
In the first issue of Captain America: Steve Rogers, we learned through a flashback that Sarah was saved from her husband by a Hydra agent named Elisa Sinclair. She then invited Sarah and her son out for dinner, and just before leaving, she handed her a pamphlet with Hydra’s logo on it. That ended there, where as, here, in the present storyline, Captain America throws one of his colleagues out of the plane and recites ‘Hail Hydra’. You are shocked, aren’t you? Well, you are not the only one.
How long was this twist in the making?
As per Nick Spencer, the previous writers of the comic had been building towards the idea of Hydra have infiltrated many government organizations and teams. He said, ‘‘I started asking, who’s the worst person it could possibly be? It was really obvious straight away that there’s nobody who could do more damage and nobody that could be a more valuable Hydra plant than Steve Rogers.” Take the superhero who is literally dressed in American flag colors and turn him into one of the biggest sleeper agents ever. Interesting, right?
What else is in store?
Well, according to the writers, the story is going to get larger than we can ever imagine.
It is hard to believe that the symbol of peace and justice is nothing but a traitor. Nick Spencer has confirmed that this is not a clone, an imposter or some mind control. This is Steve Rogers, Captain America himself. What impact will this have on the MCU? What is his mission as a sleeper agent? All these questions will be answered only with the time. We know a few things for sure:
1) Boyfriends can wait: Captain deserves a good and clean identity first. The fans have ditched the #GiveCapABoyfriend trend and got on board with the #SayNoToHydraCap.
2) Many fans have traded their Team Cap shirts for Team Iron Man and have either been sobbing with their Captain America action figure in the hands or have already thrown it at the back of their closet.
3) The wait for the new comic is absolutely unbearable. I am already screaming into my pillow here, and I am sure the rest of the fans of Marvel are doing the same.
WHY NICK SPENCER, JUST WHY?
