The legal notice generated by IMA (Indian Medical Association) might compel Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to think if they have showcased something offensive in their film Gabbar is Back which released a week ago.
IMA is an umbrella body of doctors practicing modern medicines and has more than 2.5 lakhs people across India. It has accused the film`s lead Akshay and producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali of framing the doctor`s profession in a bad or wrong context.
Secretary General of IMA, Dr.K.K Aggarwal told PTI, “The way the producer and the actor have shown the medical profession is a wrong way. People may lose faith in this noble profession. That is why we have decided to serve them legal notice tomorrow.” Adding more to it, he said, “”Medical profession is like a temple and very different from political, police or other fields. Hence, you should be responsible and careful while portraying this profession.”
The medical organization sent a legal letter on Sunday to the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley complaining about the same. Their demands say that the offensive scenes should be deleted from the film and the screening should be suspended till those scenes get eliminated.
Talking about the derogatory scenes in the film, Dr.Jayesh Lele, president-elect, Maharashtra said that the film shows doctors acting in a fraud manner as they operate an already dead person. He further said, “The hero of the movie is aware that the patient is dead as he is carrying a death certificate with him. However, he still approaches the hospital as if the patient is alive. This sends a wrong signal to society and we strongly condemn this. The movie is a total instigation of the general public against medical profession. With violence against doctors on the rise, such type of unjustified message through the movie will only add fuel to the fire.”
Clearing IMA’s front, Dr. Lele said, “IMA is anguished over the way medical profession is projected in the movie ‘Gabbar is Back’. We have marked copies (of the letter sent to I&B minister) to the Censor Board and the Union Health Minister, hoping that some action will be taken on the same.”
As reported by TOI, a medico-legal expert from Mumbai, Dr. Ashish Tiwari was quoted saying, “There may be a few black sheeps in our profession, but showing the medical profession in such a bad taste is nothing less than incriminating.”
Produced by SLB and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, and written by AR Murgadoss, the film released on May1, earning quite satisfactory acclamations with doing well at box-office. It is for us to see now whether the IMA`s legal demands get implemented or not by the Minister and what the film team has got to say on it. Will they agree to cut the scenes from the film? Well, let us wait and watch….
