In Other Words is, to explain simply, a love story of a writer’s passion for another language. In Other Words, is an autobiographical work written in Italian which shows the process of learning a new language, identifying yourself with it and learning to express yourself in that language. This book explores a person’s love for another language and to be truly and completely immersed in that language, and it also describes the journey of a writer seeking a new voice. It describes the reinvention of the author and the exploration of oneself.
This book is written by Jhumpa Lahiri, for whom the love of language was for Italian. She first came across and was fascinated by Italian during a trip to Florence after college. Lahiri studied Italian for many years after that, but always felt that she wasn’t a true master in the language as of yet. To satisfy her desire of mastery in the language, she moved to Rome in 2012. In Rome she began to read and write a journal solely in Italian.
In Other Words is translated from Italian by Ann Goldstein. We all know Jhumpa Lahiri as the author of The Namesake. Some of her other works are, Unaccustomed Earth, The Lowland and Interpreter of Maladies. She has received numerous awards for her writing including the Pulitzer Prize, for Interpreter of Maladies. Her novel, The Namesake has been adapted into a film.
