City Of Nine Gates: A Review

‘I am going to take this bucket of water and pour it on the flames of hell, and then I am going to use this torch to burn down the gates of paradise so that people will not love God for want of heaven and hell, but because He is God.” (John Green)

city-of-nine-gatesIf we are not here for ourselves, then who are we here for? Somebody called God? Almighty? Okay fine, accepted – Accepted that God is mightier than money; but then, where to find him? Where do we go in search of Him? Where is He?

Pankaj Rajput, my hands come together to applaud your novel City of Nine Gates. As long as authors like you showcase their bravado at taking up the pen to educate a generation, lost and listless, one need not fear the onslaught of atheism creeping into our minds when we are busy meditating about the two new truths of (modern) eternity- money and success!

City of Nine Gates is a tale carefully woven, its tapestry ranging over the ancient Vedas to the realms of metaphysics and spirituality. The protagonist, an atheist with money firmly on his side, is forced to seek the whereabouts of his long lost friend. The City of Nine Gates is a region, untrodden by most. It is the land of the mystique where faith and imagination co-exist, where the conscience meets consciousness. But the city, given its incredibility, was known only to the Gods and the wisest sages of the Advait and Sankhya. Does the atheist succeed on the enterprise that he has undertaken is a question that answers itself through the 290 pages of spectacular descriptions, a taut narrative and an immense insight- a peek into the crystal ball of unfathomable knowledge, through the kaleidoscope of curiosity and glistening astonishment.

Rajput incorporates the Vedic elements of Gyan, Vishwas, Buddhi, Ichha and the other Vrittis by personifying them as credulous characters. As the journey begins, we, as readers, are at once, unassumingly catapulted into a land of inward enlightenment. There comes a point of time where we cannot help asking ourselves, “Have I found my friend too? A long, lost friend?” “What did those sages realize that we still haven’t? Rajput, guide us…” affirming his belief in Truth to be the Absolute and yet, acknowledging the inherent diversity of Nature, Rajput’s tale takes after the zeitgeist of Dun Scottus’ poetry. His detailed study of the Upanishads and the Shlokas; his organic understanding of it reflects prominently, as embellished rubies, shinning; – throughout the novel. Paulo Coelho struck gold with The Alchemist and The Zahir; Rajput follows suit.

Containing more than our mundane realities, the book abounds us in mysteries; it often compels us to remember Robin Sharma’s The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, owing to Rajput’s great attempt at a unique concept. A stronghold of the Shastras, Rajput’s creative prowess dazzles as the sunshine on the Siachen- soft yet sure. Readers, discover you. Elevate.
