What stories do you generally expect from a debutante author, especially a young one? A love story? Their take on college life? Repeating the same tale about how they fell in love with a girl in their engineering days and eventually married her. So, I was pretty surprised when I came across Pratik Deshpande’s book. Oh! It does have a tiny love story within the folds of the book but thankfully its not the plot of the book. Time to put you out of your misery.
Meet 23 year old Piyush Mehta, a civil engineer by profession. Piyush works for one of the leading corporations in India, Expanding India. Piyush is a family man, a beloved son and a caring brother to his younger sister, Priti. A shy person by nature, Piyush isn’t very comfortable around girls in general. The Mehtas were a happy little family. Living in their peaceful abode in Bilaspur.
Sharmaji’s pet, that’s what people at the office call Piyush. The reason behind this is that it is his job to pick up and drop Sharmaji, his boss to and from his house. Piyush happily does so because this means that he gets to catch a glimpse of his boss’s pretty daughter, Sneha on whom he has a big crush. Piyush was pretty content with his life and was ecstatic when Sharmaji told him that he was going to take Piyush along with him to the R&D building. But Sharmaji falters just before taking him into the building, irritating Piyush. What makes Sharmaji so hesitant all of a sudden? And to make the situation murkier is Mr. Sethi, the head of security who has a showdown with Sharmaji at Expanding India’s function. And two days later Sharmaji commits suicide and Piyush is sucked into a toxic whirlpool of corruption, industry bigwigs, murders and everything that he hadn’t imagined in his entire life.
Deshpande adds a little bit of everything into the book. There’s drama, helplessness, love, confusion et al. But the best thing about the book is the stark reality. He has put forward a new concept in the book. I won’t reveal what it is because that will be a major spoiler.

My Verdict
3.5
I recommend everyone to read this book as it really is the truth hiding underneath the superficial layer of shine and glitz of India.
