Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao said he made comments on politicians very casually and withdraws his remarks after the controversy. Yesterday talking to reporters the scientist said politicians are ‘idiots’ as they have not done much to help the scientific community.
“It is a very ordinary statement and use of English language. I said we’re a bit idiotic in doing things. That doesn’t mean people are called idiots,” Rao said.
“I was speaking informally as if to friends when I made the idiot politicians remark. Had I known that this was so formal, I would have weighed my words more carefully,” said Rao, the Chairman of Prime Minister’s Scientific Advisory Council.
“It was all in good humour. I was not angry,” he added.
“Why the hell these idiots these politicians have given so little for us. Inspite of that we scientists have done something,” Rao said on Sunday’s press conference.
However, he maintained his position on the issue of supporting the scientist community.
“Industry is making profit. They should also do something for the people. A small amount of that profit should go for the future of India,” Rao reiterated. “We have not understood the right requirement and have not used the right support,” he added.
On Saturday Government of India has announced honouring cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Scientist CNR Rao with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country.
