Very recently, that is in June 2014, this national park was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The Great Himalayan National Park was granted the status, ‘exceptional natural beauty and conservation of biological diversity.’
The areas of three watersheds, Jiwa, Sianj and Tirthan rivers comprise this national park. The pristine snowy peaks, sky-touching glaciers, wide stretches of meadows and the secluded peace are a true Himalayan treat. India considers Himalayas as the home of Gods. Although it is geologically the one of the youngest places it is a biological repository.
The ecosystem at the GHNP is a combination of world’s two major faunal regions – south Oriental and north Palaearctic. The exotic flora and fauna can only be experienced by actually being there. It is an abode to more than 350 faunal species – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mollusks and insects.
Ideally any time is the best time to visit this heaven on earth, but those interested in the transitional wildlife should choose autumn.
