Facing The Mirror: Are Our Children Safe?

Some of the recent incidents keep hunting me every day and asking me some cruel and stunning questions. My conscious did not allow me to run away from the realities and force me to address the core issues involving the safety of our children. Are we concern about the safety of the little children in India?

Questions which we often tried to ignore by saying ‘it happens rarely’ or ‘It can’t be true’ are those we seldom talk in public. We all tried to hide it in the closet. But the continuous incident reminds us how indifferent we became and how we let the system eats our soul.

Do we really care for the next generation? Do we care for the little children who depend on us for their safety? Aren’t we become some alien, selfish people who only like to criticize the system, blames government and then forget everything until the next incident happen.  Yes, we are.

Are we as a society failed to nurture and protect our kids? Should we not blame ourselves to create a neglected society which can’t control violence against children? Many incidents shock us, mock us but we are too lenient to respond till the things happen to us, to our near and dear ones.  Then we felt shock, we shout, we ask for help and not receiving it makes us angry, we start blaming system, we blame almost everyone, but do we have any moral right to wait for helping hand when we ourselves never help the helpless victims.

Recent crime reports are revealing that in India the children below the age of 10 have become soft target and got murdered randomly almost every hour. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are three top states where children are mostly killed. Rest of the states is not far behind. The reasons are being kidnapping for ransom or result of extra marital affairs.

In March this year, the two-year-old Baby Falak was brought to the Delhi hospital with severe head injuries, broken arms, bite and burn marks. It found out that she was battered and beaten by her step-father. A horrific torture one can’t even imagine. She was died after 2 months battle. The shock reveals another shocking story. The 14 year old girl who rescued baby Falak and admitted her into the hospital is herself a victim of child abuse and forceful prostitution.

Babay Falak shook us apart. We all wept and trying to cope with this reality before Afreen news broke from Bangalore. A three-month-old baby Afreen lost the battle after being allegedly tortured by her father. Same story, same result.
India got independence six long decades back but yet failed to deal with the issues like child birth, child rights, child labour, free education for kids, girl child death, killing of unborn girls, or female foeticide, child sexual abuse, child murder and abandonment. Where are we moving? The society at large failed because it unaffected us.

Save Us!

5 year old Mahi Upadhyay of Gurgaon fell into a 70 feet deep borewell and could not be saved after four day’s rescue operation by Army. Around the same time a youth, Roshan Mondal in Howrah died after fell down into a well. Another boy, four -year-old boy, Sumit fell an open sewerage in Gurgaon and died. The list will go on…. We watch all this ‘rescue operation’ LIVE thorough 24X7 news channels and helplessly watch the untimely unkind death of these little angels.

As many as 16,298 cases of rape against children were registered in India between 2008 to 2010. The convicted were only 3,781 and rest was acquitted due to weakness in Indian judicial system.

The issues are endless. We can not only blame the system or wash off our responsibilities by choosing worthless politicians into the power. We can’t depend on other people for change. We need to first change ourselves then the whole systems will fall into place. It is we who becomes corrupted and retarded in mind. There is no instant magic to solve this problem. Our indifference and

selfish attitude towards almost everything makes the society so vulnerable and weak.  Our responsibility does not end with mere watching continuous coverage of these horrifying incidents or read on newspaper. We need to search within and start taking responsibilities. We need to raise voice to rectify the error. For how many more years we will sit like ‘3 monkeys’? Our children need us.

We need to speak out and force the indifferent system to move and do something before negligence take away some more valuable and innocent souls. We need to come out from the comfort zone and start voicing. Silence is the biggest sin according to me. ‘The world suffers a lot not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people’. No matter whether India becomes Superpower or not, if we cannot protect our children then shame on us.
