Services on the western route were badly hit after a Churchgate-bound 12 coaches local train derailed between Andheri and Vile-Parle. Seven coaches of the 9:56am Virar-Churchgate train derailed at 11:03 am between Andheri and Vile Parle, leading to an utter chaos in the morning hours.
The totally packed Churchgate train derailed a while after it had exited the Andheri station. The train derailed with a thud. According to Mid-Day, the motorman of the train applied the emergency brakes, which the witnesses said may have helped to avert a major tragedy.
Engineers and rescue operators were rushed to the spot immediately and the work to restore the services had begun. Officials said it might take up to 24 hours for complete normalcy to be restored. However, by 7pm the fast line to Virar was opened for traffic.
Four passengers were injured and rushed to the nearby Cooper Hospital. No fatalities were reported.
This incident led to several trains getting cancelled, while the others were stranded at or between certain stations, until they got a clearance to move ahead. Some long distance trains were terminated at Borivali and reversed in down line. While some passengers chose to stay in their respective trains, many others were seen walking on the tracks to the nearby stations.
Soon after the incident, the Western Railway coordinated with BEST to ply extra busses between Churchgate and Andheri at the evening hours for the commuters. However, commuters travelling by road had to accost horrible traffic and congestion on flyovers and highways.
