Veteran social activist and former MP Mrunal Gore passed away due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday in Thane. She was 84.
Mrinal Gore, who was fondly called ‘Paniwali Bai’ for her tireless effort in bringing regular drinking water supply to Goregaon, also known for her activism on issues of price rise, civil rights, water rights, trade union activities and women’s empowerment.
A visionary Mrinal left the medicine career in 1947 and joined politics. She dedicated her life to public service and fought continuously to secure civil and political rights for the helpless people.
In 1961, Gore won a seat in the Bombay Municipal Council. Gore contested Parliament election on a Janata Party ticket in 1977 and after winning she was offered the Health Ministry by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, however, she declined the offer. In 1985 she took up the issue of banning sex determination tests.
People across political and social circle mourn on her death. May god rest her soul in peace!
