Former world number one Venus Williams knocked out of first round of Australian Open on Monday, losing against Russian Ekaterina Makarova in 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Williams loss to 22-seed Ekaterina Makarova comes as a shock on the opening day of the year’s first grand slam tournament. Williams has been struggling with her back injury, exhaustion and inconsistency and has not done well since 2009.
“I do play points really well, and then sometimes I don’t put them together as well. I feel like I have to be patient with myself because I really haven’t had a chance to play that consistently,” Venus Williams said after the match.
“I love Australia. I’d love to come back,” the 33-year-old added.
