Manchester United broke their 3-match winless streak with an away victory over Crystal Palace last night. Robin Van Persie scored gave the defending champions the deserved lead at the hour mark through a spot kick and Rooney hit the target with a brilliant strike few minutes later to seal an important 2-0 victory.
Crystal Palace defended with sheer determination right from the kick-off with only striker upfront. United enjoyed lion share of the possession in the first half but could not create a proper opening that could have let to the first goal of the match. Pre-season signing from Everton, Maraoune Fellaini who made a come back into the first team after a break due to injury got the best chance of the match but he curled wide from a close range.
United began the second half with much more intent and began to look more likely to score. The turning point of the match came in the 60th minute when Chamakh tripped Evra just inside the penalty-box to stop the French fullback’s goal bound run. The referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot immediately. Van Persie did no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net as he wrong footed the goalkeeper Speroni with ease. Few minutes later Rooney, boosted with a new 5-year record breaking contract, finished the hopes of any sort of comeback from the Crystal Palace players with a superb strike that had class written all over it. David Moyes then opted to inject experience in the team as he brought in Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher in the midfield to avoid any slip up in the final ten minutes.
With this 2-0 win United climbs up to 6th position in table ahead of Everton, who lost their match against Chelsea by a slender margin of 1-0. United is 8 points adrift of the final Champions League qualification spot where Liverpool is sitting pretty.
