It has hardly been 24 hours that the Australian Open 2014 witnessed one of the major upsets in the Women’s singles. Before the shock had sunk in totally, one more upset has brought in further surprises for the audiences at the Rod Laver Arena. This was Novak Djokovic’s turn to hit the headlines for losing out in the fourth round.
It was a repeat of the last year’s fourth round match where Djokovic won the marathon five-setter against his Swiss opponent Stanislas Wawrinka. But this time round the world no 8 turned the tables in his favour beating the four-time champion in another five-setter. The scoreline at the end of the match read 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 in favour of the talented Swiss, much to the disbelief of most of the viewers, be it in the stands or on television. Wawrinka who pushed the Serb right till the end in the last edition of the tournament looked determined to change his fortunes even after losing the first set and held his nerves at crucial junctures of the match. The neat result was handing over a premature departure to the defending champion of the contest.
Djokovic, after losing out to the Swiss star, remarked at the post-match conference, “I know that I fight all the way through and laid my heart out there. It’s a battle. One of us has to lose. He was, as I said, a better player. He stepped in and he won the match.” the world no 2 further added, “He deserved this win today. I congratulate him absolutely. I gave it all. I tried to fight till the last point as I did in a very similar match we had last year fourth round, same court, but it wasn’t to be this time.”
