At last it seems that All India Tennis Association (AITA) have worked out a
compromise formula to resolve the ongoing drama. AITA has announced two doubles teams for London Olympics. Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna to team up, while Leander Paes will partner Vishnu Vardhan at the much awaited competition.
AITA president Anil Khanna told media, “Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan and Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will be the two teams. We request Leander to reverse to his thoughts and he should help Bopanna and Vishnu to succeed in their first Olympics.”
After both Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna openly refused to play with Leander, the AITA has no other option to send the two teams. Now it is to see whether world number 7 Leander Paes agrees to pair with lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan who currently ranked 207.
Anil Khanna expressed his sympathy for Paes ,“…in the given circumstances, the best option is of sending two teams. Undoubtedly the most patriotic one, who has the record of most David Cup appearances for India and has served the nation for over 20 years, had been driven to the wall and had to react sharply.”
Earlier in the day, Somdev Devvarman added much drama while announcing to the media that he is ready to pair Paes. But AITA did not take his words for consideration as Somdev is still unfit and out of regular match practices for a while. Somdev is also not taking part in the upcoming Wimbledon.
AITA also announced that in mixed doubles category Sania Mirza will be paired with Paes. This is interesting as Sania herself wanted to be partnered with Bhupathi in the mixed doubles.
AITA may take some disciplinary action after the Olympics against Mahesh & Bopanna for challenging AITA’s decision openly.
