Tendulkar Not Getting Bharat Ratna?

As per some media reports, iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s name has not been recommended for India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna by the sports ministry. The ministry has recommended  two names for Bharat Ratna  – legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.

To facilitate with highest civilian award of  the country beyond fields like arts, literature, science and public service, last year sports personnel were also included by the government for their exceptional services or performances.

The sources said that sports ministry did not received any recommendation from BCCI over  Sachin’s name for this year’s Bharat Ratna despite people from all section were expecting.

Recently press council chairperson justice Markandey Katju criticised inclusion of sports personnel and filmstars in the Bharat Ratna category by saying, “People are talking of giving Bharat Ratna to cricketers and film stars. This is the low cultural level to which we have sunk. We ignore our real heroes, and hail superficial ones.”
