Sri Lanka made a mockery of the Scottish team as they beat the European side by 148 runs in their final game in the group stages of this world cup. Scotland simply had no answer to Sri Lanka’s class in the middle and succumbed rather meekly to a better side.
Batting first Sri Lanka finished with the score of 363/9 in 50 overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan (104) and Kumar Sangakkara (124) slammed centuries once again to make sure that Sri Lanka posted a huge total. It was Sangakkara’s fourth consecutive century in this world cup which is a new world record. No one had managed to do it over the years and Sangakkara by doing it showed his class for one more time, with just few months left in his career. Angelo Matthews’s late surge in the innings made sure that Sri Lanka went past the 350-run mark. His 21-ball 51 once again proved how dangerous can he be towards the fag end of the innings. All the Scottish bowlers went for runs except Berrington and Taylor. Berrington picked up couple of wickets while Taylor picked up one.
Scotland never looked like giving a fight to the Sri Lankans with the bat. The situation worsened when Sri Lanka picked up early wickets. Captain Mommsen (60) and Coleman (70) scored fifties but those runs were never enough to even put pressure on the Sri Lanka. Berrington’s 22-ball 29 only delayed the inevitable as eventually Scotland go all out for 215.
It was real moral boosting win for the Lankans while the Scots would remain winless in this edition of the Cricket World Cup. This win takes Sri Lanka ahead of Bangladesh into the third position in the group. Although Bangladesh has a match in hand it seems that Sri Lanka will take the third position in the group for Bangladesh has a very little chance of winning against the mighty Kiwis.
