Rafael Nadal domination at the Roland Garros continued as he beat the current world no 2 Novak Djokovic with considerable ease to lift the trophy for a record 9th time. The King of Clay lost just one set, that too in the final, before getting a taste of the trophy this year. The scoreline read 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in favour of the Spaniard as Djokovic failed to triumph in France for the second time in three years.
Nadal shrugged off a shaky start losing the first set in the match as well as in the tournament to wipe away any sort of challenge put forward by Djokovic later to finish off the final in a long battle of 3 hours and 31 minutes which eased away a bit towards the end.
As the match went Djokovic seemed to lose his control over the match as Nadal slowly but steadily began to make inroads in to the right path.
Nadal at the prize distribution ceremony said, “Playing against Novak is always a big challenge… Sorry for him. I think he deserves to win this tournament. I’m sure he will in the future.”
With this win Rafa equaled Pete Sampras’s tally of 14 Grand Slam titles. The only man standing in front of him with 3 more titles is the great Roger Federer. But the kind of Nadal is in, it seems that it is not too far away when he will become the record holder for most number of Grand Slams. He also became the only person in the history of tennis to lift one particular Grand Slam for the nine times.
