Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon championship

Following Maria Sharapova’s footsteps, world number one and two-time champion Rafael Nadal departed from the ongoing Wimbledon championship.

The former champion Maria Sharapova had saved six match points before lost out to ninth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the fourth round at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Kerber beat Sharapova 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 on Centre Court in 2 hours, 37 minutes rally.

“It’s unbelievable,” Kerber reacted after the match adding, “It was so tough (a) match. Every single set was so close. Maria’s a great player. I was just fighting, concentrating and focusing on myself. I’m so happy to be in the quarters now.”

Rafael Nadal’s loss was a huge shock to his fans despite his bad form on grass court here at All England club. Earlier in 2012 he lost out in the second round and in 2013 he said goodbye in the first round itself. This time he lost against 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios of Australia in the fourth round.

The former champion lost the match to 144^th ranked player 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Kyrgios became the first man to reach to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in his debut in last 10 years.
