There was no more upsets in the semifinals of the women’s singles in the ongoing edition of the Australian Open. As expected Li Na got better of Eugenie Bouchard after Cibulkova had ousted Radwanska, the highest seeded player left in the tournament.
Some might think that defeat of Radwanska was also a sort of upset. But the result of the match between Radwanska and Dominica Cibulkova can’t be tagged as an upset as many of the experts had predicted Cibulkova’s victory over the Pole in the semis, though not in the manner in which Cibulkova has done it. Cibulkova thrashed her opponent, who is ranked much higher in WTA standings, in straight sets. At the end of the match the score read 6-1, 6-2 in favour of the 20th seed.
In the second semifinal, Li Na stamped her authority over Eugenie Bouchard as she defeated the 19-year old in her first Grand Slam appearance semi-final in straight sets. Bouchard could do very little to Li Na’s somewhat flawless display of tennis. The young player did her best to defend but could not manage too much against her Chinese opponent who seemed to be at her best on the court. The scoreline of 6-2, 6-4 does not at all suggest the fact that Bouchard did play well enough but it was not her day. However she has promised a lot and has got a bright future ahead.
The final is set to be an exciting one as both Li Na and Dominica Cibulkova are playing quite beautifully. Cibulkova will be playing her first ever Grand Slam final, while Li Na has already won a Grand Slam. She has got the experience. Naturally the Chinese will have an upper hand before the start of the match. But the possibilities of Cibulkova winning the trophy in her first appearance cannot be ruled out as well. Who will be the new Australian Open champion? Only time can tell us.
