USA sealed one of the most famous victories in their history of football when they won it riding on a late goal from Brooks against Ghana. The 2-1 win against Ghana now places them in a considerably favourable position to qualify from Group G in spite of matches left with Germany and Portugal.
USA began their World Cup campaign with a bang when Client Dempsey put them ahead in the 1st minute of the match. It is the fifth fastest recorded in the history of the World Cup football. Ghana then playing catch up game and it seemed that it would be a long night for the Americans. Ghana pressed forward to put the defense under real test and pulled off few good saves from Tim Howard. In the 22nd minute of the match USA suffered a setback in the form of an injury to Altidore as he had to be stretchered off and substituted. Both teams got some chances but they couldn’t succeed in converting them into anything fruitful as the teams went into the break with a scoreline 1-0 in favour of USA.
The second half began with Ghana going forward in search of the equalizer. They came close on numerous occasions but somehow they have managed not to score. Finally in the 81st they got the equalizer when Ayew cashed in a through ball fed by Gyan to put the Ghanaians on level terms. Just when it looked like that Ghana will try to play out the game and settle for a draw, USA made it clear that they want a result out of this. And they got rewarded when second half substitute Brooks headed the Americans ahead for the second time in the match. Zeus floated in a perfect ball from the corner and Zeus rose to the occasion to head past the defenders and the keeper to take USA into a 2-1 lead with not much time left to go.
It was a tense last few as the American dugout sat with fingers crossed. As the final whistle went off, Juergen Klinsman’s out stretched hands towards the sky said it all. It was one of the most memorable wins in the history of football in USA and a victory they will savour for long.
