Italy’s world cup winning team member Genaro Gattuso has been put under the scanner as allegations of match-fixing are raised against him. Gattuso, well-known for his tough tackles, has been making the headlines as the investigators have linked out some relationship between this Italian great and the bookies.
The Italian midfielder, also famous for his contribution to AC Milan, will be facing the probe as a widening inquiry of anti-corruption unit has targeted Milan’s last title campaign. Another player who will be facing the probe along with Gattuso is Cristian Brocchi who has played for both AC Milan and Lazio. Both the players have been alleged to have been a part of match-fixing in the Italian Serie A in the 2010-11 season.
Roberto Di Martino, who has been given the responsibility to investigate, said on Tuesday, “About 30 matches, a good part of them involving Serie A, are under investigation.” Four people who have already been put behind the bars are Salvatore Spadaro, Francesco Bazzani, Cosimo Rinci and Fabio Quadri. All of them have been arrested on the accusation of creating the link between the fixers and the players. When asked about Gattuso and Brocchi, the prosecutor said, “Gattuso and Brocchi were connected to the case by the use of phone taps.”
Gattuso’s agent Andrea D’Amico, after the allegations brought against Gattuso came to limelight, said, “I spoke to Rino and he’s stunned. It’s a bolt from the blue. He added, “Right now it’s important not to draw any conclusions and rather wait and see why these names are coming out.”
