France simply toyed with the Swiss at Salvador to secure their place in the last 16 with one match still to be played. The 5-2 win came as an outcome of great counter attacking football merged with good finishing that saw the 1998 world champions winning comprehensively.
At the end of the first half the score was 3-0 in favour of France. The final outcome was already written on the wall. The first two of the three came in a matter of 2 minutes. Giroud put France ahead in the 17th minute with a perfectly placed header from a flag kick. Matuidi doubled the lead just after the restart in the 18th minute and the Swiss defense was in total disarray. Valbuena made it 3-0 before the break and France had a penalty saved few minutes before the half-time.
The second half started almost in the similar fashion with the French players kept on questioning the Swiss defense. In the second half Benzema and Sissoko made it 5-0 for the La Marseilles. It could have been even worse for Switzerland but their goalkeeper came to their rescue and denied France from scoring further.
However a late surge from the Swiss saw the French defense conceding a couple of goals with not much left on the clock. It was too little too late from Dzemaili and Xhaka as they tried to squeeze out few positives from the match. France had their 6th sixth goal ruled out in the last few seconds of the stoppage time as the referee had blown the whistle before the curling shot from Benzema had crossed the goalline.
It was more than just a comprehensive win who had a miserable outing in the previous edition of the tournament. They are really looking really good but it is too early to predict anything as France is yet to face any of the bigger names in the tournament.
