Manchester United sealed their berth in the second round of the Champions League 2013-14 with a resounding 5-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. United now need only one point from the rest of the matches to qualify as the top team from Group A of the tournament.
It was an astounding performance from both Wayne Rooney and veteran Ryan Giggs that saw United pull out one of the best performances in recent time. In fact it was United’s best performance away from home in European competitions since they beat Shamrock Rovers 6-0 in 1957.
The Bundesliga side that was tipped to provide United a tough time away from never got their things right as United played some brilliant football to secure such an emphatic win and that too in the absence of ace striker Robin van Persie. Once Valencia scored the opening goal of the match in the 22nd minute, it was United all the way till the final whistle went off. An own goal from Emir Spahic in the 30th minute saw United double their lead as the two teams went into the lemon break with United enjoying a 2-goal advantage.
In the second half United looked all the more threatening as Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa made merry in the midfield. It was a matter of time before United scored the third one through Jonny Evans in the 65th minute. Chris Smalling added the fourth one in the 77th when he nicely jabbed his shot into the back of the net with the outside of the foot. Rooney had a great time for yet another time as he was involved in four of those five goals.
Such a big win against the team which is placed in the second spot in their home league will surely give a lot of confidence to the United team that will enable them to go hard at the league leaders in the Premier League. It is perhaps the best win for United under their manager David Moyes.
