England beat the world cup debutants Afghanistan by 9 wickets (D/L Method) to register their third win the tournament in six matches. It was nothing more than a consolation for the Englishmen as they were already out of the tournament after their defeat against Bangladesh in their previous encounter.
England won the toss and put the Afghans into bat as there were possibilities of rain coming in during the match. And it did come in when Afghanistan was batting. Afghanistan could bat for 36.2 overs after which rain came in. They managed to get up to 111 in those 36.2 overs losing 7 wickets. Shafiqullah was the top scorer for the Afghans as nobody really managed to score runs. All the English bowlers were on fire as the cloudy weather favoured swing bowling. Chris Jordan and Ravi Bopara picked up 2 wickets each while Anderson, Broad and James Tredwell picked up one wicket each.
England’s target was revised to 101 in 25 overs by Duckworth-Lewis Method. England chased it down with s they won the match by 9 wickets. Ian Bell scored yet another half century to take England past the target with 41 balls left. It was an easy win in the end for England but it was a hollow one.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, will be leaving the cricket’s biggest stage with their held high for some scintillating performance, the most memorable moment being the moment of winning against Scotland, their first win in a world cup.
