Novak Djokovic became the champion at the Rod Laver Arena for the fifth time as he beat British no 1 Andy Murray in four sets. In an encounter that lasted for 3 hours and 39 minutes Djokovic showed his strength to overcome the challenge of Murray and lift the eighth Grand Slam title of his career.
It was very evenly poised till the end of the second set as Murray and Djokovic were leveled at one set all, both getting decided in tie-breakers. Djokovic had won the first set 7-6 and Murray the second one by the same scoreline. But somehow Murray lost the intensity in his game as Djokovic picked his game just at the right moment and broke him to win the third set 6-3. In the fourth set Djokovic did not have to look back as he simply toyed with his younger opponent and won the set 6-0. It was a clinical performance from the Serbian in the third and the fourth that made sure that Murray could not get a sniff at winning a set. The final scoreline read 7-6(5), 6(4)-7, 6-3, 6-0 in favour of the Serbian.
For Murray it was yet another disappointing start to the year as he failed to get past the final hurdle at the Australian for the fourth time. It was also his sixth defeat in Grand Slam finals overall. He has managed to win only two of the eight Grand Slam finals in which he has featured. This is one thing Murray really needs to take care of.
