India has taken the driver’s seat in the first of the two test match series against the West Indies side at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata as debutant Mohammad Shami made a dream debut with the ball on his home ground.
The West Indies was bowled out for 234 in the middle of the third session with Marlon Samuels being the only half-centurion. The West Indies side made good use of the batting conditions in the first session as they crossed the 100-run mark before lunch after they had won the toss and decided to bat first. They had lost only two wickets till then. However half-an-hour into the post-lunch session Mohammad Shami made an important breakthrough as he castled a dangerous looking Marlon Samuels for a well-made 65. It was the beginning of the proceedings as the West Indian batsmen gave away their wickets. Shivnarine Chanderpaul made a responsible 36 before he was castled by a beautiful delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin. Shami ended up with a figure of 71/4 in 17 overs.
As the Indians came on to bat they made a solid start and are looking good on the 22 yards. India finished the day on 37/0 with Shikhar Dhawan on 21 and Murali Vijay on 16.
With the help of a brilliant bowling performance, India at the moment is on the top after first day’s play. Tomorrow they will look forward to pile up a huge total as the conditions will get better for batting on the second day.
However besides all this action, the biggest moment of the day came just before the tea break when Mahendra Singh Dhoni tossed up the ball to the little master. Sachin answered to his captain’s call as he picked up a wicket on the fourth ball of his over trapping Shane Shillingford leg before wicket. The whole Eden Gardens erupted as they saw the master pick up a wicket on his last appearance at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
