The 22-year-old Brazilian star Neymar is out of the FIFA World Cup 2014 due to a fractured vertebra following a collision with Colombian defender Juan Zuniga in the quarterfinal match in Forteleza. Brazil won the match 2-1.
Brazil’s team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar announced the news on Friday after the match.
“Unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to play,” said Lasmar to Brazil’s SportTV. “It’s not serious in the sense that it doesn’t need surgery, but he’ll need to immobilize it to recover.”
Lasmar also explained the hospital report “showed he suffered a fracture of the third vertebra”.
Neymar is Brazil’s leading goal-scorer in the ongoing world cup with four goals. He was taken directly to the hospital.
“I have been saying for three matches that Neymar has been hunted, but all the other countries say it is not true and it is only their players that are hunted,” angry Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari reacted.
Brazil will play Germany in the World Cup semi-final match on July 8.
