Mahesh Bhupathi’s run in the men’s doubles in the Australian Open 2014 was cut short when he was beaten in the second round match in straight sets. The duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rajeev Ram was beaten by the second seeded pair of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in around 97’ at the court no 6.

Bhupathi crashes out of the Australian OpenThe second seeded pair of Peya and Soares grabbed the first set in just 37 minutes with an early break as the Indo-American pair failed to put any resistance against their superior opponents. In the second set the unseeded pair tried to make a comeback into the match and even took the initiative when they broke their opponent’s service to take a lead of 4-2. But they gave away the initiative as Bhupathi failed to hold his own service in the very next game. The match went into the tie-breaker in the second set as Bhupathi and Ram saved one match point in the final game. In the tie-breaker as well they saved 3 match points to level at 6-6. However it was the delaying of the inevitable as Peya and Soares took the tie-breaker 9-7 and the set 7-6.

Bhupathi’s challenge hereby ends in the men’s doubles. He left the court with his head held high as he put up some good performances only to be let down his inexperienced partner Rajeev Ram. Though he has not performed to his potentials, Ram showed his sparks and has promised some better performances in the upcoming years.
