Azarenka departs; Australian Open set to get a new champion

This has been an edition of upsets. It all began with Serena Williams in third round of the women’s singles. Maria Sharapova followed her up in the next round. Djokovic became the victim this trend I n the quarterfinal. And Victoria Azarenka got her name listed in that group. Azarenka’s unbeaten run for two years and few matches in the Australian Open was cut short by Agnieszka Radwanska.

The fifth seeded Polish, Radwanska played her heart out and hold her in the crucial points and emerged victorious in the quarterfinal of the Grand Slam, pulling off another upset in the tournament. the scoreline at the end of the match read 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 in favour of the gutsy Pole which was the Pole’s only 4th victory against the Belarusian in 15 meetings. A jubilant Radwanska said at the post-match press-conference, “It is always hard against her. I have lost so many times that I had to play aggressive and go for my every shot. That’s what I tried to do and it worked today.” The number 5 seed is now up Dominica Cibulkova, the 20th seed, who had also stunned the viewers with her victory against Sharapova. An exciting encounter between these is on the cards when they face each other at the Rod Laver Arena for a place in the final.
