It took just 100 minutes for former world no 1 Roger Federer to book his third round match in the Australian Open 2014. The Swiss master beat Blaz Kavcic in straight sets to sail into the next round. The scoreline, in the end, read 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in favour of the maestro at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.
It was an absolute walk in the park for Federer in the first two sets which he bagged in less than an hour. Slovenian Kavcic could hardly put up a fight to Federer and it was a matter of time for the 17-time Grand Slam Champion to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Once the match went into the third set a sudden spring in steps of Kavcic could be noticed. He denied Federer any opportunities of breaking him and pushed hard at the master. The third set into the tie-breaker and the inevitable happened as Federer grabbed the set 7-6 (4). It was a dominating performance from the number 6 seed in this edition of the Australian Open. It was just the perfect start one would have looked for in a Grand Slam.
The way Federer played today’s match can easily give his fans hopes of another Grand Slam win, though the experts are not so confident about him in this year’s tournament. It’s true that Federer is now 32 years old and age is slowly making its impression felt in his game. Yet, once he plays those forehand cross-courts and the drop shots and puts in some picture perfect serves, it’s a sheer treat to have a look at those.
