Athletico Madrid rode on Diego Costa’s double strike to reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League 2013-14 beating AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate. Coming on to the second leg in the tie Milan was trailing by an away goal which they conceded at San Siro. Still there was a faint chance of the Italian side getting through to the next round of the
tournament. But they suffered an early setback when Diego Costa opened the scoring for the Spanish outfits as early as in the 4th minute of the match. Milan recovered from the early jolt as Kaka restored parity in the 27th minute of the match. However the Spanish side restored their 1-goal advantage in the tie through Arda Turan in the 40th minute. In the second half Athletico didn’t have to look back as Raul Garcia nailed the dreams of the Italian giants in the 70th minute. Costa completed the thrashing with his second of the day in the 85th minute.
With this defeat Milan are now out of the tournament before reaching the last eight. This is a real humiliation for the team which has got such glorifying history. But it Athletico’s day and Spanish side made full use of the home condition to reach the quarterfinal without any defeat.
