Argentina recorded a scratchy win to open their account against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Rio de Janeiro. Argentina eventually escaped a strong challenge put forward by Bosnia to emerge winners in the Group F match. The final scoreline of 2-1 came as a great relief for the Argentine players as well as the supporters who were getting exceedingly impatient with their country’s scrappy performance.
Bosnia had a disastrous start in the match when they conceded an own goal through Kolasinovic as early as in the 3rd minute of the match. But they slowly began to make their presence felt after a shaky start. The game became an exciting one as both teams began to find some rhythm in their attack although most of the attacks were outcome of some mistakes from the midfielders of either side. The first half ended with the score being 1-0 in favour of the South Americans.
Bosnia continued to entertain after the restart but Argentina scored the second of the night through a bending shot from Lionel Messi from just outside the penalty area in the 65th minute. But they never looked convincing in their display of football despite Messi’s antics. Bosnia took advantage of the lapse in the Argentine defense in the 84th minute when Ibisevic reduced the margin to 2-1 and set up an exciting finish to the match. Bosnia failed to equalize and set up yet another upset in the next 8 minutes or so but they promised a lot in their first match in the world cup.
Argentina might have gone over the line, thanks to the piece of brilliance from Lionel Messi, but they really need to pull up their game in order to reach the business end of the tournament. This match should work as a wake up call for Argentina.
