Next time onwards we might well find FIFA introducing a new rule which will instruct the players, who have a tendency to bite, to wear covers on their mouth. In fact Uruguay’s opponents should go to FIFA with such a plea. Otherwise it will be getting tough for the 21 players and 3 linesmen to stay unaffected. FIFA also might opt for another option- all teams should be instructed to carry tetanus in the medical kits when they will be playing against Uruguay.
Oh I’m forgetting there was a match played between Italy and Uruguay. Uruguay won it 1-0. But unfortunately they needed more than 11 players to beat Italy. After both teams had failed to break the deadlock in the first half, the stage was set for an exciting finish to the game. But it was not to be. Italy chose to sit back and settle for a draw that would have sealed their spot in the last 16. So it was up to the Uruguayans to force something out of it. Tempers rose and referee needed to take charge of the game with more authority. Instead what he did was simply horrendous. He gave marching orders to Italian midfielder Marchisio when it was clear that he had no intentions to hit the Uruguayan, neither his studs could be seen. And it turned out to be the turning point. Uruguay surged ahead with waves of attacks on the 10-men Italian defense. The South Americans came close to score but Gianluigi Buffon made an excellent save from Luis Suarez to keep the score 0-0.
Then came the most dramatic moment in the match. Suarez was seen to be getting close to Chiellini’s shoulders. The Italian defender went to referee straight away showing some spots of biting on his shoulders. But to the surprise everyone watching the proceeding the referee let the incident go. And Suarez went unpunished for a shameful job of biting an opponent.
Amidst all these controversies Uruguayan captain Godin put his nation ahead in the 81st minute with a perfect header from a corner. Well no controversy revolving that one for it was a typical central back’s goal and 10-men Italy was facing the scare of yet another early exit. Italy finally looked to attack but it was an uphill task for the Italians to beat the defense without Mario Balotelli, their only striker who could have made a difference. And the inevitable happened. When the final whistle went off, the stadium ruptured into sheer jubilation. Uruguay was into the last 16 and Italy was out. What a night it was turning out to be for the Uruguayan fans. The Italians will keep on complaining though. But that’s the way things pan out. Obviously it could have been different had the referee been a bit more aware of the surroundings. But there is no point complaining, as Uruguay and Costa Rica go through to the next round from the group of death.
