PM and President led International Yoga day celebrations in Chandigarh and Rashtrapati Bhavan respectively

The physical, mental and spiritual practice of discipline, Yoga, an Indian folklore marked its second year of worldwide celebration today, June 21. As the world observes Yoga Day today, PM Narendra Modi, joined the mass demonstration being held in Chandigarh. Approximately 30,000 people were part of the event that is being celebrated for the second year in a row.

The Prime Minister, wore a white t-shirt with a scarf, walked around surveying people, performing asanas before settling down on a mat and joining them at the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh.  
 
In his address, PM Modi advocated for popularisation of the practice across the world and desired for more Yoga teachers to be produced from India. He also announced two awards for the Yoga Day celebrations next year, one at the national level and the other at the international level.
 
He said, ‘today, on behalf of the government, I am announcing two awards … One will be for excellent contribution in the field of Yoga internationally and the other for excellent contribution to Yoga in the country.’

“These awards will be called International Yoga Award and National Yoga Award.
 
He said a special committee will formulate the rules and decide the jury. Said he: “We want to ensure that those making excellent contributions in the field of yoga will be honoured.”
 
President Pranab Mukherjee outlined the benefits of Yoga at a yoga event at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He earnestly urged people to make yoga an integral and inevitable part of life as it promotes better health and brings harmony.

The president said Yoga leads to mental and physical strengthening. “It will enable them to live a healthy life. It will create overall harmony and between body and mind.”
