In a last attempt to secure himself from the execution scheduled for the 30th of this month, the sole 1993 bomb blast accused Yakub Memon filed a mercy plea before the Maharashtra government, on Tuesday, after the Supreme Court turned down the curative petition filed by Memon and his lawyer.

Memon’s lawyer told the press that he had submitted the petition to the authorities of the jail he is lodged in currently. Previously too, a mercy petition was filed. However, the lawyer said, it was filed by Memon’s brother Suleman Memon, whereas the present petition is filed by Memon himself.

On Monday noon, Memon’s lawyer and one of his cousins saw him at the jail he is lodged currently, after which his mercy petition was submitted to the jail authorities. His Delhi-based lawyer too, saw him on Tuesday after the Apex court’s judgement on his curative petition was pronounced.

In 2014, President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected his mercy plea and this one is the second mercy plea filed by him.

Brother of Tiger Memon, Yakub Memon is an accused of 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts. 257 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in this first coordinated terror attack wherein RDX was used and several scooters fit with bombs were placed at several locations in the city.
