The US has indicated that it will issue a Visa to Narendra Modi if he elected as the Prime Minister of India.
US assistant secretary of state Nisha Desai Biswal told a TV channel that the US would welcome Modi to its country if he becomes India’s next Prime Minister.
“I would just say that the United States has welcomed every leader of this vibrant democracy, and that a democratically elected leader of India will be a welcome partner,” Biswal said adding, “Visa issues are handled on a case by case basis. And determinations are made based on the facts of the day and reviewed at the time a request is made.”
Biswal also said that Washington is looking forward to do business with Modi. This come at a time when opinion polls are indicating possible Modi win in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
For the last nine years US had boycotted Modi over 2002 Gujarat riot and refused to give him a diplomatic visa, but now as Modi emerging as the top choice to become the next Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy, Washington is forced to reach out to Modi. Only last month US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell had met Gujarat Chief Minsiter in Gandhinagar to break the ice.
Meanwhile Modi is silent on the visa ban.
