To embarrass the Congress more, the UPA allies like NCP and National Conference have opposed the enquiry committee to probe the alleged role of BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi in Snoopgate scandal.
Although adamant Congress said they will not compromise the issue and go ahead with the probe panel, but the unexpected opposition from its own ally threw Congress in back foot.
Senior NCP leader and Union Minister Praful Patel said that NCP chief Sharad Pawar has spoken to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and told him that there was no need of the probe panel just days ahead of formation of new government in the center.
“When the results of the Lok Sabha elections are due in two weeks’ time, where is the need for such an enquiry,” he told PTI.
Echoing the same sentiment, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah twitted that it would be wrong to set up a probe panel now.
“Was talking to my dad last night and he felt the same way-setting up a commission of inquiry in the dying hours of UPA-2 is just wrong,” Omar twitter. “If the decision to appoint a commission was taken in December it should have been implemented. To appoint a judge 5 months later is wrong,” Omar added.
Earlier Law Minister and Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that government is committed to name a judge who will be leading the probe panel into the snoopgate scandal before 16 May.
“The judge heading the commission will be appointed before May 16. Why is Modi afraid of a probe? Gujarat set up a commission choosing their own judge, why are they scared of an independent probe,” Kapil Sibal had said.
Hitting out at UPA government over the issue, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said no judge will be part of such a desperate exercise.
“I will be very curious to know the name of the judge who has agreed to ‘lend’ himself to the UPA. I will be surprised if there is one. I hope, for the cause of judicial dignity, no one agrees to be a part of this desperate exercise,” Jaitley had said.
It has been alleged that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had ordered illegal surveillance on a young woman architect in the state in 2009 after her father requested Modi to “take care of my daughter and to ensure that she does not face any problem.” On Modi’s order, then Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered the surveillance.
