Just 72 hours before the scheduled dialogue between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in New York, terrorists have attacked the Kathua sector in Jammu and Kashmir and killed at least 12.
Initial reports suggested that earlier this morning around five terrorists dressed in army uniform, reached a police station in Harinagar and shot four police personnel and two civilians and injured several. After the attack, the terrorists escaped in a bus and attacked an army camp in Samba where they killed at least six Army personnel including a Lieutenant Colonel.
The army had sealed the Jammu-Kathua highway. Two terrorists were killed in Gun battle.
Incidentally only on Sunday a CISF personnel were killed in Srinagar.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and said the attack is to sabotage the peace talk.
“I condemn this attack that took place in Samba and Kathua sector in Jammu and is on right now. My condolence to the family members of the jawans and Army personnel,” Omar said.
“The timing and location of the attack makes it clear that their intention was to derail the peace process,” he said. “It may be a political compulsion for some political parties to call off the dialogue but if the dialogue is called off, the peace process will be derailed, it would be a victory for the terrorists and that would be wrong,” he added.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condemned the twin attack saying it is an attack on peace.
BJP said there is need for talks with Pakistan as they are engaged in proxy-war with India and attacking Indians.
“We condemn the twin attack in Jammu. This shows how Pakistan continues its strategy. The talks between Indian PM and Pakistan PM in US are uncalled for.” BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said.
