The Apex court on Monday stayed the execution of Veerappan’s four aides till Wednesday, February 20. They had approached the Supreme Court seeking reduction in their death sentences. Their execution was earlier scheduled for Sunday.
Three member justice bench comprising Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, justices AR Dave and Vikramajit Sen said, “The execution of death sentence of four convicts shall remain stayed. Let the writ petition be heard day after tomorrow.” .
Veerappan’s four aides – Gnanaprakash, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran – were awarded with death sentences in 2004. They were responsible for killing 22 policemen in a landmine blast in 1993 at Palar in Karnataka.
The president, Pranab Mukherjee had already rejected their mercy plea.
