Batting for “cooperative federalism” and the concept of “Team India”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met the chief ministers of all states and discussed the future of the Planning Commission. While most chief ministers agreed in restructuring the planning commission, however no consensus were came out on dissolution the commission.
The Prime Minister is pushing for new body which would provide more power to the state along with transparency and inclusiveness. The meeting was called to discuss the name, structure and mandate of the new body.
“The states should have a key role in the new body,” Modi said, adding “states sometimes feel there is no platform to express their views…there should be an effective mechanism to address inter-state disputes.” “Can we develop a new mechanism, that plans according to India’s strengths, empowers states, and brings on board all economic activity, including that which happens outside the government,” Modi asked.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters, “Most people (chief ministers attending the meeting) were in favor of a structure in which besides the Centre, states are also represented…The central government will take a consultative view after today’s meeting.”
The Prime Minister urged to shape the new body from “top to bottom” to “bottom to top”. He said that it was impossible for India to develop unless states develop.
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the Chief Ministers of all states except West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah.
