Congress president Sonia Gandhi has demanded Leader of Opposition post in the Lok Sabha for her party.

“We should get the Leader of Opposition’s post. If not, we will see,” Sonia Gandhi told reporters on Monday.

“Congress is the largest party, should get the post of the Leader of Opposition,” she added.

Congress is considering legal option if it were denied Leader of Opposition post.

Earlier in the day Congress leaders had met Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and put forward their request.

Reacting to this development, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “This is Height of defeat depression. The “grand old party” has threatened to disrupt Parliament if they are not given the post of Leader of Opposition.”

Technically Congress does not qualify for the post of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha with only 44 MPs . It needs 11 more MPs to achieve 10% of total House strength of 545 to get the post. However, BJP may consider gifting them the post to ensure the Congress’ support on important bills in the Rajya Sabha.
